Get Started with Driving Lessons

Beginning the process
What’s it all about?
To get started with driving lessons in Bournemouth and Poole you would normally need to need to be at least 17 years old, be able to read a current style UK number plate of any car from a minimum distance of 20m and have a provisional driving licence by law. You can apply for a licence up to 3 months before your 17th birthday, but cannot take lessons on the public roads, or take a Theory Test until your birthday.
Your Provisional Licence
You can apply online for a comprehensive pack containing everything you need to help you get started with driving lessons, or you can get an application form at the Post Office. The cost of a provisional driving licence is currently £34 for online applications (01/2025). You will normally receive your licence in a week to ten days.

Some questions beginners always ask
Find answers to common questions about starting your driving lessons, from choosing the right instructor and preparing for your first session to overcoming nerves and maximizing value with block bookings—helping you take the first step with confidence.
Motivation is the key. Start when you feel that you really WANT to learn to drive, not when others are pushing you into it, or as soon as you are 17 and you are doing it just because all your mates are learning. Wanting to succeed is key. If you are feeling unready, wait until you are more prepared.
Look for a school with good reviews, good communication, and a style that suits you. Consider things like first-time pass rates, and how lessons will fit in with your schedule. Be prepared to be flexible yourself though, as the best schools are busy. Remember that paying the most doesn’t mean you get the best, and paying less doesn’t mean you get less.
Your first lesson will usually start with your licence being checked online in the car and you will have to read a numberplate. You’ll then cover basics like getting you set-up in the car comfortably, then learning the controls of the car, and how to move off safely and pull up at the side of the road. You might get to turn a corner if there is time. There is always less driving than usual on a first lesson, but there will be a lot to take in.
Block booking saves money and allows both you and your instructor to book ahead so that you both can put lessons in your diaries in advance. At The DriveAll Driver Training Co. we find that most of our customers prefer to block book, and almost all of our lessons are block booked.
Our instructors are very supportive and patient and trained to help those with nerves and anxiety. You will find that your confidence will gradually be increased, and you will never be made to feel bad or shouted at. Mistakes are normal, and part of the process. Read our page on how we help nervous learners.
